Do You Mind?

Art and science are almost like rivaling siblings. Pitted against each other since birth, with different values and ideologies, they’ve always competed for the more legitimate answers and responses to the wider world.

But a new exhibition and publication combining science and art aims to bridge the gap between two previously separate spheres. Do You Mind? is the result of a collaboration between a select group of artists and neuroscientists for the Centre for Brain Research (CBR) at the University of Auckland, and involves the creation of artistic works created after a artist-scientist partnership.

This is no ordinary art collaboration, with a promise to “push the boundaries of the interaction between research and creative engagement.” The exhibition aims to change the way brain research is typically viewed, increasing awareness through innovative artistic responses.

The result is an informative and inspiring collection of works, inspired by the methodology of brain research. The exhibition moves across multiple media, from video installation to contemporary watercolours; kinetic sculptures to oil paintings.

When: Thursday 29 July to Saturday 7 August.
Where: Suite 106, Ironbank Complex, Karangahape Road, Auckland.
