Juliette Hogan / Q&A

Who are you and what do you do? Juliette Hogan, Fashion Designer.
Tell us about your current collection? I have just finished designing summer, which will go into store in August - I am really excited about it. It’s loosely based on Yacht Rock which is a genre of music I was introduced to at a bar one night and loved. It’s loosely nautically themed but based more on the mood evoked by the music and how that might translate to the goings above and below deck.
The collection is of course very much Juliette Hogan but I think it is a nice new interpretation of my aesthetic. A little more graphic, still feminine but maybe just a little more grown up.
Who do you have in mind when you're designing your range? A girl who is effortlessly cool. Who has a certain attitude about her. Who likes the finer things in life and isn't afraid to let that be seen. She's well mannered but has a darker side too - but she's no bitch.
What is your fashion background? Mum taught me how to sew when I was 12 and from then it was just something I did. When I left school I studied textile design at University and received a scholarship from Karen Walker and Steinlager to study at Parsons in New York, along with that I did various internships both in NY and NZ.
I then came back and started my label, its the only job I've every really had so I'm pretty lucky really.
What is something only your closest friends know about you? Something that will stay that way… That only my closest friends know.
What or who inspires you? People and places inspire me. I don't think sources of inspiration are really a way to reinvent the wheel. It’s impossible not to be visually inspired by what is around you. Everyone interprets it in a new way.
For summer, music was a big influence and created a real vibe for the collection.
My mum and my dad. They are the bestest parents in the world and I aspire to have a life like theirs.
If you could only wear one outfit for the rest of your life what would it be? The Malorie pants from either my summer or winter collections and a cashmere sweater. Just perfect for everything.
What is the worst piece of clothing that you love? I kinda like all my clothing...
What would you do if you weren't a fashion designer? My other love is beautiful food so naturally it would involve that. I actually got into culinary school before fashion took over. Anyone who knows me will know how much I enjoy baking - or a civil engineer. I love bridges.
